ELEMENTS Magazine is a relatively new digital publication - “A monthly magazine dedicated to the finest landscape photography, insightful editorials and fluid, clean design. Carefully curated by the same team that brings you the Medium Format Magazine.

The experience allows you to stand alongside a photographer in the field as they see and craft their image. This genuine experience of landscape photography is at the core of ELEMENTS Magazine and we cordially invite you to join us on this adventure”

You can subscribe using the button below, and if you use the custom coupon: JULIAN10 you will receive a 10% discount on the annual subscription.

In the article I talk about my photograph of the two iconic Caledonian Pines, by Loch Tulla, in the Central Highlands of Scotland.

It was made in December 2012 while on a last minute trip to the Highlands when snow was forecast, and features in my book North Northwest.

“The image is not a crop, but is comprised of three stitched frames created with horizontal shift on my ALPA 12 STC camera...”

Detail from the original photograph.

Above you can see the simple yet precise shifting mechanism of the ALPA 12 STC camera body. By using the custom indent option that ALPA offer you can very quickly repeat ‘Left / Centre / Right’ shifts of varying degrees without having to use the shift wheel.

My most commonly used shift distance settings are 10 | 0 | 10. I also have 15 | 0 | 15 indents as an option but use this less, as it can sometimes result in a slight vignette that the LCC struggles with.
