My name is Julian Calverley. I’m a UK based landscape and advertising photographer, working worldwide, professionally, since 1988.
The idea behind ‘I’m In A Wide Open Space’ was to create a dynamic, evolving space where I can house my landscape photographs, thoughts, work processes, stories and inspirations.
As well as making pictures, both personal and commissioned, I also run workshops and tours in association with The Knoydart Retreat, ALPA cameras, for who I am an ambassador, and small group and one-to-one bespoke adventures.
I have appeared at a number of major international landscape photography conferences and events, delivering talks on a variety of subjects, including my approach to landscape photography, making pictures in ‘bad weather’ my workflow and post production technique, and how taking pictures on an iPhone lead to the creation of my first book.
Building on the success of my first book #IPHONEONLY, I’m proud to say that my latest book, North Northwest, has won the BBD&P ‘Best British Book’ & ‘Book of the Year’
I am an accredited member of the Association of Photographers, have featured numerous times in Lürzer’s Archive’s ‘Top 200 Ad Photographers Worldwide’ and am a member of the Cloud Appreciation Society. I also sit on the panel of judges for the ‘Outdoor Photographer Of The Year’.

“Julian Calverley is a British born landscape and advertising photographer, who has been creating imagery, in one form or another, since he was old enough to hold a paint brush.
He very quickly demonstrated a love and natural talent for drawing and painting, favouring watercolour works of landscapes. Then, after a brief and uninspiring spell at art college, he realised it was the mix of photography and traditional darkroom skills that would allow him to express himself most effectively.
The next few years saw experience gained with various studios and in 1988, at 24 years old, Julian set up his own studio and darkroom.
He now divides his time between assigned work, shooting throughout the world for a diverse mix of clients, and personal projects. His personal work evoking the painterly qualities of his early watercolours, focusing mainly on natural landscapes and built environments in their various atmospheric conditions.”
